Ohio woman thanks lawyer for saving her life 36 years ago

By Douglas Stanglin, USA TODAY

Florida attorney Joel Cohen says the e-mail he recently got from Carolynn Ivey "raised the hair on my neck." The last time she was a part of Cohen's life, Carolynn Ivey weighed less than 2 pounds and desperately needed a lifesaving blood transfusion despite the religious objections of her parents.
Cohen, then a young Pensacola attorney, was tapped by the Escambia County Circuit Court to become temporary guardian to give legal consent for the transfusions for Carolynn and her twin sister, Julia, the Pensacola News Journal reports
Although Cohen never saw the girls or spoke to the parents, he threw himself wholeheartedly into the case, rushing off to Tallahassee for critical appeals court documents and hurrying back that evening so that the doctors could get to work.
"Once I saw the gravity of the situation, I jumped in with both feet," Cohen says.
Carolynn Ivey Evans, now a 36-year-old shipping clerk in Ohio, survived, but her weaker sister did not.
Ivey Evans, who has four children, three stepchildren and three step-grandchildren, tells the News Journal that she found out about her case over the Internet and wanted to thank Cohen "for saving my life."

"If it was not for Mr. Cohen fighting for me, I would not be here today! It brought me to tears that he would try so hard," she tells the newspaper.
Ivey Evans says her mother left the Jehovah's Witnesses faith a year after she was born, and her father later went to prison, where he died in 1995.

"My relationship with my mother is great," she says, "Though this is something that we have not really discussed. I don't want to upset her."

Ivey Evans tells the News Journal she donated her children's cord blood at birth and hopes that a child's life might have been saved.

"If one of my children were in need, I would not think twice about getting the help they need to survive and get the fighting chance I have been given," she says.

Does the Watchtower leadership Train Jehovah's Witnesses to be SocioPaths?

We all have stories of inhuman SocioPathic behavior in Jehovah's Witness World
especially by their leaders .

We read first hand accounts every day on http://www.jehovahs-witness.net forum.

Profile of the Sociopath
This website summarizes some of the common features of descriptions of the behavior of sociopaths.
  • Glibness and Superficial Charm
  • Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.
  • Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as "their right."
  • Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.
  • Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.
  • Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.
  • Incapacity for Love
  • Need for Stimulation
Living on the edge. Verbal outbursts and physical punishments are normal. Promiscuity and gambling are common.
  • Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others' feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.
  • Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature
Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.
  • Early Behavior Problems/Juvenile Delinquency
Usually has a history of behavioral and academic difficulties, yet "gets by" by conning others. Problems in making and keeping friends; aberrant behaviors such as cruelty to people or animals, stealing, etc.
  • Irresponsibility/Unreliability
Not concerned about wrecking others' lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.
  • Promiscuous Sexual Behavior/Infidelity
Promiscuity, child sexual abuse, rape and sexual acting out of all sorts.
  • Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle
Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future, poor work ethic but exploits others effectively.
  • Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility
Changes their image as needed to avoid prosecution. Changes life story readily.

Other Related Qualities:
  1. Contemptuous of those who seek to understand them
  2. Does not perceive that anything is wrong with them
  3. Authoritarian
  4. Secretive
  5. Paranoid
  6. Only rarely in difficulty with the law, but seeks out situations where their tyrannical behavior will be tolerated, condoned, or admired
  7. Conventional appearance
  8. Goal of enslavement of their victim(s)
  9. Exercises despotic control over every aspect of the victim's life
  10. Has an emotional need to justify their crimes and therefore needs their victim's affirmation (respect, gratitude and love)
  11. Ultimate goal is the creation of a willing victim
  12. Incapable of real human attachment to another
  13. Unable to feel remorse or guilt
  14. Extreme narcissism and grandiose
  15. May state readily that their goal is to rule the world

Jehovah's Witness Magazine Under Fire For Claiming Defectors Are 'Mentally Diseased'

Jehovah's Witness Magazine Under Fire For Claiming Defectors Are 'Mentally Diseased'

English police are investigating whether a Jehovah's Witness magazine violated the country's religious hatred laws.
The July edition of the monthly publication Watchtower warned readers not to follow "false teachers" who may be "mentally diseased," The Telegraph reported. Part of the passage at issue reads:
"Suppose that a doctor told you to avoid contact with someone who is infected with a contagious, deadly disease. You would know what the doctor means, and you would strictly heed his warning. Well, apostates are 'mentally diseased', and they seek to infect others with their disloyal teachings."
Watchtower is distributed around the world, but it was in the English town of Portsmouth that a group of ex-Witnesses made an official complaint.
Many Jehovah's Witnesses are not comfortable with the religion's notoriously harsh treatment of members who disagree with its doctrine and may choose to leave the church, reports The Independent One former member told the newspaper that "Many like me remain associated with the Witnesses out of fear of being uncovered as an 'apostate' and ousted, not just from the organization, but from their own friends and families. I find I am now branded as 'mentally diseased'--giving any who discovers my true beliefs free license to treat me with disdain."
According to PBS, Jehovah's Witnesses shun "as many as 30,000 members each year who refuse to live by the religion's moral tenets," as of 2007. Members who leave the group are subject to similar treatment.
Rick Fenton, a church spokesman, backed up the organization's practices to The Telegraph: "Any one of Jehovah's Witnesses is free to express their feelings and to ask questions," he said. "If a person changes their mind about Bible-based teachings they once held dear, we recognize their right to leave."

Jehovah's Witnesses Hate practice of shunning covers-up child abuse

Jail for Jehovah’s Witness elder

who molested girls

OCT 31 2013

A Jehovah's Witness elder who was exposed as a paedophile on Facebook has been jailed.
Jonathan Rose was branded a hypocrite as he was locked up for molesting two little girls he met through the church.

Manchester Crown Court heard that Rose, of New Moston , won the trust of his victims’ families before targeting their daughters. His youngest victim was just five-years-old when she was groped by him in her own home. The other was ten when Rose, then 27, kissed her sexually.
Rose was first accused of indecently assaulting a teenage girl he met through the Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1995. He was acquitted of that offence in a trial and went on to become an elder in his congregation.

However, after his first accuser branded him a ‘paedo’ on Facebook , his crimes against the two other girls came to light. Rose was found guilty of two charges of indecent assault and has now been jailed for nine months and banned from visiting homes where there are children present.
The joiner, who is married with children and continues to protest his innocence, showed no emotion as he was jailed and made subject to a sexual offences prevention order. He must sign the sex offenders register for life.

The court heard that he even sat in judgement in a church ‘investigation’ into the second victim when she was a teenager.

Her ‘entirely normal’ teenage behaviour was thought to be ‘inappropriately sexual’ by elders.
Antony Longworth, defending, handed the judge a bundle of supportive letters from fellow Jehovah’s Witnesses which he described as expressing ‘disagreement or disbelief’ about the guilty verdicts.
But Judge David Stockdale QC told Rose: “You are now utterly disgraced – even though many members of that community still place a great deal of faith in you. The Jehovah’s Witnesses... upholds very high standards of moral behaviour – you deviated altogether from those standards.”
The family of Rose’s first accuser say they were encouraged to cover up their allegation. He was cleared of groping the then teenage girl in 1995 trial, but she would go on to be a witness in the latest court case. Her family say they were hounded out of the Jehovah’s Witnesses when they expressed concerns.

Her father told the M.E.N: “They held a meeting where they stood on a platform and said no-one should ever take a ‘brother’ to court. They dismissed our complaint as something that happened between teenagers.

“We were ostracised, and then told to get out of the congregation after the trial.”
A spokesman for the Jehovah’s Witnesses said: “Everyone has become more aware of how to deal with these issues in recent years. In no way would the Jehovah Witnesses purposefully try to protect anyone who is accused of serious crimes.”

Why so many Jehovah's Witnesses suicides

Most  Jehovah's Witnesses will know of many suicides within their ranks . I know of 6
personally .

As many know,  what happens is a individual is shunned or disfellowshipped by the
decree of 3 unqualified Jehovah's Witness elders . For any one of a long list
of perceived transgressions . Some biblical some not .

If the person was born a Jehovah's Witness then their whole Jehovah's Witness family will
immediately shun them . As will all friends in the cult .

Mother
Father
Siblings
Children
Grandchildren

This many times leads to depression and suicide .

When confronted with their unchristian application of shunning most Jehovah's Witnesses
will dishonestly misrepresent the realities of it .

Here are the common lies they tell .

"We only disfellowship for biblical wrong doing ."

"Only people who are stubbornly unrepentant are disfellowshipped ."

"Disfellowshipping is loving. "

Since Jehovah's witnesses disfellowship people for smoking tobacco its obvious
that they don't follow the bible . Its also a fact that a high percentage of
shunnings occur for the "sin" of changing one's mind about the teachings
of the cult .  Or even just asking forbidden questions about the sordid history
of the Jehovah's witnesses or their doctrinal scandals  .

The following links are of  EX Jehovah's witnesses and current members
discussing the prevalence of suicide .

Governing Body breaks its own name-calling rules in “Human Apostates” convention talk
avatar

The Society is contradicting its own condemnation of “name-calling” in its latest convention rant against so-called “apostates”
Jehovah’s Witnesses around the globe are currently attending the 2013 “God’s Word Is Truth” District Convention. One feature of Saturday’s programme that is causing a stir on YouTube is a talk that condemns “human apostates” – former Witnesses labelled by the Society as “mentally diseased.”
The Teaching Committee of the Governing Body is tasked with preparing material for conventions and assemblies, and it is these men who will have carefully worded the manuscript on which this controversial talk is based.
Having approved this material, the Governing Body will not be pleased to discover that one clever YouTuber has put together a four-minute video that uses their own words against them. Specifically, the Society has been shown to be hypocritically flouting its own condemnation of the spurious form of argumentation widely known as “name-calling.”
The video is based on a 2000 Awake! magazine entitled “Should You Believe Everything You Hear?” Under the heading “Name-Calling” page 6 says…
“Some people insult those who disagree with them by questioning character or motives instead of focusing on the facts. Name-calling slaps a negative, easy-to-remember label onto a person, a group, or an idea. The name-caller hopes that the label will stick. If people reject the person or the idea on the basis of the negative label instead of weighing the evidence for themselves, the name-caller’s strategy has worked.” (g2000 6/22 p.6)
The new video brilliantly contrasts the above with the words contained in the venomous “Human Apostates” talk, which includes recorded statements such as the following…
“Like Satan, human apostates are unruly men who cook up wicked reasonings and season their brew with poisonous lies that deceive minds. Their preference is to partake of falsehood at the table of demons. Human apostates are part of the seed of the serpent spoken of at Genesis 3 verse 15. If we wish to please Jehovah, we cannot be feeding at his table and at the same time be nibbling at the table of demons, eating from the hands of Satan’s helpers – human apostates.”
The video itself can be viewed below…
Sadly, this is not the first time the Governing Body has resorted to underhand tactics in suppressing those who dare to oppose their authority. Earlier this year I wrote an article entitled “Secrecy and deception: Watchtower fights dirty in its war against “apostates”,” which outlined the vilification, mud-slinging, secrecy and outright lies that have been successfully used by the Society for decades in fighting dissent.
Many who like me are known among Witness friends and relatives as disagreeing with the Society will be cringing that their loved ones will be exposed to such overt propaganda during the convention – deliberately intended to stir up hatred and suspicion.
It can only be hoped that some loved ones will see through the manipulation and comprehend what it really means – that the Society is desperately trying to hide something. Sadly, the reason that name-calling and denigration is now being employed so freely by the Society is because, as they themselves recognize, such tactics work only too well.

Jehovah’s Witness elders stonewalled a police probe into church member’s sexual abuse

THREE  Jehovah’s Witness elders refused to co-operate with police investigating child sex abuse claims against a fellow JW who was yesterday jailed in Newcastle Crown Court for 13 years. Gordon Leighton, 53, was found guilty on two counts of indecency with a child, and six of indecent assault after a six-day trial.

In 2010 Leighton broke down and admitted the abuse to the three church elders when confronted with allegations. He confessed to Simon Preyser, Harry Logan and David Scott but they refused to co-operate with the police.
Their barrister Richard Daniels claimed they had a “duty to God” not to breach confidence. He said: “Privileged communication between members of the congregation and ministers is an absolute right and there is no power in law to breach such a confidence.”
But Judge Penny Moreland made an order, saying:
They are in possession of relevant evidence as to a point which is of real significance.
The court heard David Scott, an elder of Washington’s Lampton Kingdom Hall, made a telephone call to the church’s London HQ.
The JW cover-up team: from left, Harry Logan Simon Preyser and David Scott
The JW cover-up team: from left, Harry Logan, Simon Preyser and David Scott
He was instructed, with other elders, to carry out an investigation into the sex abuse claims against Leighton when they first emerged in December, 2009.
A meeting was set up in April 2010, to see if a “sin” had been committed. Leighton confessed after Bible verses were quoted which said “God sees everything”.
Despite confessing he was not “disfellowed” by the church until further allegations were made against him.
Prosecutor Katherine Dunn told the court:
The elders conducted their own investigation. After initially denying the allegations the defendant broke down and admitted sexually abusing the complainant.
But Leighton, of Washington, Tyne and Wear, refused to answer any questions when interviewed by detectives and claimed his confession at the meeting was limited.
According to this report on JW Survey – a website launched “to give voice to millions of Jehovah’s Witnesses around the world who would not normally have the opportunity to say what they really think about the Watch Tower Society, or the teachings and practices of the Governing Body” – it was only after the victim, now an adult, broke her silence by making a complaint to the police in 2009 could the authorities investigate. However, the elders refused to cooperate with the police investigation for three years.
Even after the case was brought to court and the three elders were issued with subpoenas, they refused to cooperate. Preyser, Logan and Scott went so far as to legally dispute their summonses on religious grounds, but were ordered to testify by Judge Penny Moreland after months of legal wrangling.
In denying the motion to withdraw the summonses, Judge Moreland said:
Public interest is clearly in favour of this evidence being given. What was said by the defendant on that occasion is of great significance in the trial.
Despite this ruling, the elders refused to give evidence until hours before they were due to appear as witnesses before the jury.
In passing sentence Judge Moreland told Leighton:
You manipulated her [the victim] with a combination of affection and attention and violence and threats.
She jailed him for 13 years. He was also given a sexual offences prevention order and must sign the sex offenders’ register for life.
Leighton was at the centre of an infamous case when his first wife Yvonne, 28, died after refusing a blood transfusion on religious grounds. After giving birth to a baby boy in January 1993, she needed surgical intervention and developed further complications and blood loss.
But she had signed a form during her hospital stay, stating she was not to receive a blood transfusion. She died as a result.
John Cedars, writing on JW Survey, said:
If the Watch Tower Society is found to have had a hand in this cover-up, it would only constitute further evidence of their long history of protecting pedophiles by keeping their heinous crimes wrapped up in a cloak of secrecy under the auspices of the ‘two witness rule’.
Despite the blatant cowardice and lack of accountability shown by the elders and the defendant in this trial, it is heartwarming to note the fortitude and resilience of Judge Moreland in refusing to be duped by Watchtower’s men in suits. We can also be grateful that the unnamed victim in this case had the bravery to come forward and see that justice was finally served on her so-called ‘brother’.

Here's what the Jehovah's Witnesses say about people who use name-calling

"Some people insult those who disagree with them by questioning character or motives instead of focusing on the facts. Name-calling slaps a negative, easy-to-remember label onto a person, a group, or an idea. The name-caller hopes that the label will stick.
